In June 2007, a young male orangutan we named Heldy was confiscated from an oil palm plantation by BKSDA and brought to Nyaru Menteng. At the time of his arrival Heldy was in good health weighing 12 kg and we estimated his age at between 4 – 4½ years of age. During his quarantine, Heldy had a very nice attitude and was full of curiosity – although Heldy is classified as wild, he is not aggressive towards his caretakers.
Now Heldy weighs 34.5 kg and has been living with his best friend Jojo! Both Heldy and Jojo will be released together at the same time and the same point and our hope is that like Astrid and Monic, these boys will stick together and keep each other company in the forest.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on how they develop and adapt back to life in the forest.
